We don’t usually associate winter with lawn care. That said, just because your grass is dormant at the moment doesn’t mean you’re off the hook for maintenance. Here are a few tips for keeping your lawn healthy even during the coldest months of the year:

Clean it up

All of the debris, leaves, and toys out on your lawn might not seem like a big deal at first. What many homeowners don’t realize, though, is that these objects can smother the grass, create disease, and even serve as an invitation for pests. So clean it up now and avoid having to start from behind the 8 ball with your lawn come springtime.

Be aware of traffic

Dormant grass will tolerate a moderate amount of traffic. Just be aware that a heavily worn path will be slower to green up in the spring and possibly cause compaction. If at all possible, avoid creating such a path in the first place.

Fertilize

Winter is a great time to apply fertilizer to your lawn. Follow the instructions on the package and apply only the recommended amount. An excessive amount of fertilizer can burn your grass at any point during the year, not just in the dog days of summer.

Aerate

Think of aerating as providing your lawn with extra air. Should you choose to hire an aeration service, expect them to make holes in your lawn for planting seeds. If you have a smaller yard, you may want to consider renting an aerator and doing the job yourself.

Spread cool-weather grass seed

Head to your local home improvement store and purchase a package of grass seed that says “cool season” or “cool weather.” Feel free to sprinkle the seed over the lawn with the same spreader you used for the fertilizer. One other pro tip here: Do your best to spread the seed evenly so you won’t have clumps of grass later.

Rake and water

Not exactly sure how to tackle soil clumps on your lawn? We recommend breaking them up with a rake and then covering the seeds a bit. In terms of watering, keep the soil moist and don’t let it dry out.
